Let's compare these head-to-head on the dimensions that actually matter when you're facing a deadline or a budget constraint.

Dimension 1: Reliability & Risk of Failure

Here's where I had my initial misjudgment. I thought a rebuilt pump from a good shop was basically as reliable as a new one. That's true—if the shop has the OEM drawings, the correct metallurgy, and the original impeller geometry. Most don't.

In my experience after 12 rush-order failures across three years, rebuilt pumps fail roughly 4 times more often in the first six months than new KSB units. Why? Hidden damage. Bearings that look fine but have microscopic spalling. Seal faces that are 90% flat. Impellers re-machined to a slightly wrong angle.

But look at the full picture over two years:

  • Rebuilt pump: $7,000 upfront + $3,200 in repairs (replacement seals, bearing issues, alignment fixes) + 2 unplanned shutdowns at $2,200 each in lost labor and parts. Total: $14,600

So Where Does a Rebuild Make Sense?

  • Low-duty applications (less than 20 hours per week, non-critical)
  • Obsolete models where KSB no longer manufactures the exact replacement (though parts support is excellent)
  • Emergency band-aid when the new pump is 6+ weeks out and you need something running in 7 days (but you order the new pump anyway)
  • Budget constraints where the upfront capital simply cannot exceed $8,000

For every other case—buy the new KSB. It's not about brand loyalty. It's about math.
