But when I started getting quotes, the pricing varied wildly. One authorized distributor quoted $8,200. Another came in at $7,900. Then a third-party reseller offered what they claimed was a 'KSB compatible' unit for $7,200. I didn't know enough to verify whether it was actually a genuine KSB product or a knockoff. I went with the $7,200 option. In my mind, I was saving $1,000 for the company and meeting the project deadline. My operations manager was happy. My boss in finance was happy.
For about three months.
The Turning Point: When Things Started Falling Apart
The first sign of trouble was a small vibration. Nothing alarming—maybe a slightly unbalanced impeller. I mentioned it to the plant supervisor, and he said, 'Keep an eye on it.'

Lessons Learned: What I'd Tell Any Buyer
This worked for us, but our situation was a critical wastewater lift station with continuous operation. If you're buying a pump for intermittent duty in a clean-water application, the calculus might be different. A less expensive pump might be perfectly adequate.
But here's the thing: if your application involves sewage, industrial waste, or continuous high-horsepower operation, don't cut corners on the pump. The maintenance costs and downtime risk just aren't worth it.
A few things I check now before buying any KSB pump:

- Check the serial number — KSB can verify genuine units before installation. I do this on every pump now.
- Get the full package — Make sure the quote includes proper seals, installation kit, and warranty registration. A 'pump only' price often misses critical components.
